Florida Has One of the Lowest Covid Death Rates in the Country

Florida now has one of the lowest case rates for Covid-19 in the country despite having no mask or vaccine mandates.

In the recent Covid-19 surge Florida was recording 101 cases per 100,000 people and only 1.77 new deaths per 100,000.

Since mid-September, Florida is only recording nine cases per 100,000 a day with less than 0.2 deaths per 100,000 according to the CDC.

Governor Ron DeSantis has refused to implement vaccine mandates or mask mandates and has instead focused on early treatment.

Florida previously had the highest seven-day average for cases and the highest hospitalization rate in the U.S.

Now, however, they are doing just as well as California although California has taken a much stricter approach with mask mandates, limited gatherings, and closing bars and indoor dining.

Florida has the best case rate in the country behind California, Mississippi, Hawaii, and Alabama.

Former FDA Commissioner Says It’s Time to Remove Outdoor Mask Mandates

Former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb has said he believes it’s time to do away with outdoor mask mandates at this time. “People could choose to wear a mask if they want to. I think there shouldn’t be requirements that they have to wear masks outdoors,” said Gottlieb on Monday. Gottlieb currently serves on the board of Pfizer.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has agreed with Gottlieb’s statements, saying “What I believe… the country is going to be hearing soon if updated guidelines from the CDC”. President Biden is expected to announce new CDC guidelines as early as this week. The CDC currently says the following about masks outdoors:

Masks may not be necessary when you are outside by yourself away from others, or with people who live in your household. However, some areas may have mask mandates while out in public, so please check the rules in your local area (such as in your city, county, or state). Additionally, check whether any

Current coronavirus infection rates are down 14% from one week ago. The risk of transmitting coronavirus outdoors is extremely low. Additionally, vitamin D has been shown to help prevent the coronavirus, so the more fresh air we can all get, the better.

Quebec Government Warns About Potentially Toxic Masks Distributed to Schools and Daycares

Health Canada has warned about potentially toxic masks that were distributed to schools and daycares and other facilities. A certain model of masks (SNN200642 masks) distributed by a Quebec-based manufacturer but made in China, contains a toxic material that shows potential for long-term lung damage. They warned that inhalation of “microscopic graphene particles” can cause long-term health problems such as lung damage.

This has happened before in Quebec. In December the Quebec Government announced that the masks they had been distributing did not meet safety standards. More than 31.1 million of those masks were distributed between May and November.

The provincial government put out a notice stating, “if you have this type of mask in stock, we ask that you stop distributing them and keep them in a safe place now.”

Wearing a cotton face covering is likely the best thing you can wear to avoid toxicity, if you have to wear a mask.

1.56 Billion Masks Ended Up in Our Oceans Last Year

The latest studies on masks estimate that humans are using 129 billion face masks each month, or around 3 million a minute. Experts have warned that mask pollution may be our next big plastic problem. The world health organization estimates 89 million medical masks are required each month for Covid response, with little chance of a decrease anytime soon.

A year ago U.S officials estimated the country would need 300 million face masks to meet the need for the pandemic. The company 3M made 550 million masks in 2019 and has plans to produce 2 billion masks this year, for as long as the pandemic lasts.

There’s no way to recycle plastic masks the same way there are plastic water bottles and other plastic products. Most disposable face masks are made of three layers that just continue to break down into smaller and smaller nanoparticles.

Like other plastic debris, “disposable masks may accumulate and release harmful chemical and biological substances, such as bisphenol Aheavy metals and pathogenic microorganisms,” according to Xu and Ren. Some of the toxic chemicals released during degradation of plastic polymers include phthalatesorganotinnonylphenolpolybrominated biphenyl ether and triclosan.

3 Million Masks a Minute: The Next Plastic Problem?

OceanAsia reports 52 billion face masks were produced in 2020. Of those, 1.56 billion masks were estimated to have ended up in the ocean. Using a reusable cotton mask is better for both your health and the environment.

Texas and Other States Loosen the Reigns on Coronavirus Restrictions

The governor of Texas has announced that “It is time to open Texas 100%” Many states have begun lifting restrictions put in place to protect against the Coronavirus.

Texas is doing away with its mask mandate and allowing businesses to open at full capacity. Texas is the biggest state thus far to lift restrictions. Mississippi has also removed its mask mandate and is allowing all businesses to operate at full capacity.

Numerous states have lifted restrictions in some form, including Michigan, New York, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts.

This news is coming as President Biden, and health officials warn not to ease up on restrictions for fear of another surge in cases. President Biden has said that he expects to have enough vaccines for every adult by May.

Research Shows Masks Can Impair Babies Speech and Language Development

The coronavirus pandemic has changed many aspects of everyday life, and with covid-19 cases being front-page news, many of the repercussions of trying to combat the pandemic, have been swept under the rug.

New research has shown that wearing masks can impair children’s speech and language development as they begin to see and hear communicative signals. Babies of different ages were shown videos of people talking while their attention was tracked with an eye-tracking device.

Researchers discovered that babies begin to lip-read around eight months old, corresponding with development in their own language skills. This indicates that babies begin lip reading when they become interested in language and speech.

Crucially, once lip-reading emerges in infancy, it becomes the default mode of speech processing whenever comprehension is difficult. This is illustrated by our latest studies in which my Spanish colleagues, their graduate student Joan Birules and I found that 4–6 year-old bilingual children lip-read more when they are confronted with speech in an unfamiliar than in a familiar language.

Masks Can Be Detrimental to Babies’ Speech and Language Development

Beyond eight months, babies and children use visual speech cues to understand what people are saying. Obviously, visible speech cues are undetectable with masks. Unfortunately, not all parents are in a position to stay at home with their children all the time, and many children are spending most of their time with care providers who are often masked for the entire day.

The Environmental Impact of Disposable Masks

Experts are now estimating that 129 billion face masks, and 65 billion gloved, are being disposed of globally each month. Surgical masks weigh approximately 3.6g, equating to 451,500 tons of masks thrown away each month.

Conservationists and non-governmental organisations are increasingly concerned that a lot of the plastic waste, especially pandemic-related waste, is ending up in landfills, waterways and oceans, adding to the millions of tonnes of plastic waste already dumped into the world’s oceans every year

Three million masks every minute: How Covid-19 is choking the planet

It’s not uncommon for masks to end up in the ocean where animals get tangled up in the elastic ear loops of the mask. Animals can choke on masks and gloves that end up along shorelines.

Disposable surgical masks are made of polypropylene, a type of plastic. This type of plastic is unsuitable for recycling and does not break down easily.

If you have to wear a face-covering when going out, consider a reusable one. If you find yourself with a surgical mask that you have to dispose of, be sure to cut the ends of the ear loops off the mask so marine life doesn’t get tangled up in them.
