7 Yoga Poses to Boost Energy

Let’s be honest. Yoga is not the first thought to come to mind when you’re in that mid-day slump at work, trying to find a way to power through until quitting time. Practicing yoga may be great to unwind or clear your head, but for energy? Usually you’d avoid such activities, but actually, it might be just the thing to recharge you during the day.

Yoga concerns the flow of energy through the body, especially along the spine.  The correct movements and postures can allow prana, or life force, to flow through the spine and the body, reawakening your central nervous system from the center outward, literally giving you a new infusion of vitality. After hours of sitting behind a desk, a few yoga postures can clear up the energy that’s been blocked by sitting for so long.

While there are any numbers of yoga poses that can help, here are seven relatively easy poses you might consider if you find you need some extra energy during your daily routine.

Right Nostril BreathingRight Nostril Breathing

Breathing through the left nostril is believed to bring calm. It’s opposite, right nostril breathing, energizes. This very simple pose raises your body temperature and is effective in part of a weight loss plan, as well. Not only does it lift your energy level, it can lift your spirit, brightening your mood.

You can perform this pose sitting in your chair, though you can also assume a cross-legged position on the floor, if you like.  Block your left nostril with your thumb and extend your fingers. Inhale and exhale with deep breaths, only through your right nostril for about five minutes.

Half Sun Salutation

As the name implies, this pose is excellent for waking up in the morning, even before you’ve had a cup of coffee. It fills your body with energy, awakening you and preparing you for the rest of the day.

Start by putting your feet together, toes touching, heels slightly apart. Hang your arm from the sides, palms open. You may recognize this as Tadasana, the Mountain Pose. This is the starting position for the Half Sun Salutation.

Continue by inhaling, moving your arms up over your head as you do so. Exhale and bend forward. Inhale and lift your torso up about halfway, then put your hands on your shins and stretch out your spine. Straighten back up smoothly on the next inhale and bring your palms together as if praying. Repeat several times.

Warrior II Pose

The pose will bring strength to your legs and it stretches your spine to bring energy into your body. The name of the pose suggests power and strength, and that’s exactly what you’ll feel.

Virabhadrasana II Warrior II PoseAs with the Half Sun Salutation, this pose begins with the Mountain Pose. Exhale and move your feet a few feet apart. Lift your arms until they are parallel to the floor. Turn your  left foot about 90 degrees, keeping the heels pointed at each other, then turn your left thigh until your left knee cap lines up with your left ankle. Exhale and bend your left knee until your shin is perpendicular to the floor. Stretch out your arms, keeping them parallel to the floor, then turn your head to the left, and look toward your fingers.

You can get even more energized from this pose by utilizing the “breath of fire”. Breathe rapidly from your belly while holding the pose. Focus on the exhalations — the inhalations will handle themselves.

Triangle Pose yogaTriangle Pose

The Triangle Pose is a good follow up to the Warrior II Pose. It focuses on expanding the body and expanding the body’s energy, allowing it to flow through your entire being.

Keep your front knee straight while extending your arm forward. Bring your arm down toward your shin. Raise your other arm high and look upward. Take five deep breaths, then do the same on the other side.

Locust Pose

The Locust Pose engages the muscles of your entire back, along with your hamstrings. Your entire body is involved in trying to lift you from the earth, bringing energy from the tips of your fingers to the tips of your toes.

Lie on your belly and place your arms by your sides with your palms facing the floor. Slowly and carefully lift all your limbs, your head, and your chest from the floor, and take a deep breath. Breathe deeply several more times, and try to lift yourself just a little higher with each breath. Your neck should not be strained as you do this. If you feel comfortable in the attempt, you might even try to stretch your arms out over your head.

Chair Pose YogaChair Pose

We call it the Chair Pose, because the practitioner looks as if he or she is seated while doing it, but in Sanskrit, it is known as Utkatasana, the Powerful Pose. Using the power contained in your leg muscles and glutes, it sends energy up your spine to awaken your body.

Stand with your feet touching, or place them hip-width apart, as you prefer. Flex your lower body as though you were going to sit in a chair. Then, lift your arms to ear-level and push your chest upward to complete the pose.

Bridge Pose

Poses that involve bending your back are good for freeing energy bound in your spine, and the classic Bridge Pose is one of the best for releasing that power.

Lie on your back and bend your knees, placing your feet flat on the floor.  Put your arms flat at your sides and lift your hips high. You can lock your fingers together or keep your hands at your side, whichever your prefer. Inhale and exhale five times, deeply, then repeat.

Getting that boost of energy during a day doesn’t require tools or tricks, just some yoga. There are many more poses which can help balance your body and boost your energy.  We hope that you’ve found this information to be helpful, and that you have all of the energy you need to take on the day.

Occupy the Farm – Occupy 2.0

There is a purpose to activism. It is a means to educate, to communicate grievances, and to effect social change. But the activism of late seems to fall short of  lofty goals. What did Occupy Wallstreet and its knockoff occupy protests across the country achieve? Did we learn anything other than the phrase, “We are the 99% ?” We already knew our banks and corporations are corrupt.

There was, however, an occupy movement that began on Earth Day, April 22, 2012, that did make a difference. They called themselves Occupy 2.0.

For 80 years, the University of California, Berkley managed land called the Gill Tract, acres gifted to the university, as a public trust. This prime farmland was mostly used for agricultural research. But in 2012, the university revealed their plans to sell the land to be used for housing and retail.

On Earth Day, 200 urban farmers descended on the property with 15,000 seedlings, tools for planting, and tents to set up camp to protect and nurture the newly claimed community garden.  Their occupation, protest, confrontations with police, meetings with campus officials, help and support from the neighborhood, and their final outcome were all recorded on film by director Todd Darling whose documentary chronicles the event from start to finish.Occupy the Farm is an engaging film that uplifts the soul and inspires the closet rebel. It is a tribute to non-violent protest and community activism.

How To Use Turmeric To Kill Cancer

Turmeric is a spice that comes from the Curcuma plant. If you want to purchase fresh turmeric, you may be able to find it at a farmer’s market. If not, look for it online.

The rhizome (commonly called a root) looks a lot like ginger root with its brown peel, but it is bright orange to yellow inside. You can cut it up, grate it, juice it, crush it through a garlic press, and add it to almost anything (smoothies, beans, lentils, quinoa, meat, etc.).

Dried turmeric is a powder whose color ranges from orange to yellow. You can make your own turmeric powder by peeling, boiling, drying, and then grating fresh rhizomes, but consume fresh, uncooked turmeric to maximize its health benefits. When using in recipes that require cooking, try adding some before the cooking process and then grate some fresh turmeric on top of the meal before eating.

In recipes, one tablespoon of fresh turmeric is equivalent to one teaspoon of dried turmeric for taste.

Turmeric is one of the basic and best known ingredients in curry (which is a combination of spices) and is a commonly used spice in Indian and Asian cooking. It is delicious in salad dressings or heavily sprinkled on salads and is a welcome addition to vegetable dishes, dips, and sauces.

Health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric, with its active ingredient, curcumin, is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant with numerous medicinal uses. The more serious diseases treated and prevented with turmeric include inflammatory bowel diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and cancer.

Numerous studies have shown that turmeric helps the body destroy cancer cells, helps prevent tumor formation, slows or inhibits the spread of cancer cells, and induces apoptosis (cell suicide) of mutated cancerous cells.

How To Consume Turmeric For Maximum Benefit

Research shows the combination of onions and turmeric (combining quercitin and curcumin) reduces both the size and the number of precancerous lesions in the intestinal tract.

The combination of curcumin and phenethyl isothiocyanates, a photochemical found in cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, pack a powerful punch. In mice studies, each nutrient retarded prostate cancer cells, but when combined, these two nutrients significantly reduced tumor growth and the ability of the cancerous cells to metastasize.

Curcumin is fat soluble. Mixing curcumin with fat significantly aids in absorption. Black pepper increases curcumin’s potency by 1000 times. Mix it with olive oil or coconut oil. Sprinkle turmeric on an avocado. Blend it into coconut and avocado smoothies.

For the best results, choose the highest quality, fresh, organic turmeric, fresh organic pepper, and organic, beneficial fats. Check out this Enhanced Golden Milk Tea Recipe, and see Foods, Vitamins, and Herbs That Kill Cancer for more cancer fighting foods.

Morgellons Disease – A New Autoimmune Disease?

What is Morgellons Disease? There are several answers to this question. Ask the CDC or far too many conventional doctors and they will tell you Morgellons disease doesn’t exist, that it is a psychosomatic disorder, most likely a combination of delusional parasitosis and obsessive picking of the skin. In other words, it’s all in the patient’s head, except for the skin lesions caused from self abuse.

Ask a Morgellons sufferer or the rare doctor who believes this disease is real, and you will hear a far different story. Morgellons is a systemic disorder that involves many symptoms common to auto-immune sufferers including:

  • chronic, severe fatigue
  • joint pain
  • neurological problems
  • memory and cognitive disruptions (including brain fog)
  • mood changes

It also involves bizarre symptoms particular to this disease:

  • crawling sensations on and under the skin
  • the sensation of itching or biting
  • skin eruptions or lesions with little black specks on or under the skin
  • filaments or threads under the skin and erupting from the skin

Morgellons is currently in the news due to the emergency hospitalization of iconic singer /songwriter Joni Mitchell, who suffers from this disease. In 2010, she told the Los Angeles Times, “Fibers in a variety of colors protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically identified as animal, vegetable or mineral.”

Doctors and researchers who do not believe Morgellons to be real think the fibers are lint, though all sufferers tell them the fibers are growing out of their skin- that they pull them out as if they were pulling out a hair.

Who Has Morgellons Disease?

While most studies of Morgellons report the majority of patients were middle age white females, the University of Oklahoma says adults and children are equally affected. And while individuals within a family may have this disease, they have also witnessed families where multiple members have the disease. Therefore, it is not known whether the disease is inherited or contagious.

What Causes Morgellons?

There appear to be three major hypotheses as to the cause of this disease (by those who believe the disease is real):

  • It is believed to be a parasite.
  • It is believed to be caused by Borrelia spirochetes (the bacteria associated with Lyme disease).
  • It is believed to be a parasitic fungus. The threads or filaments are hyphae and the black and while specs are sporangia.

Unfortunately, it is far too common for conventional medical doctors to dismiss any patient when the diagnosis is unclear. Twenty years ago, is was common for someone suffering from an autoimmune disease to be summarily dismissed, especially since the cognitive and mood disturbances so inherent in the syndromes provided an easy dismissal due to mental health. Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia are still laughable diagnoses to many doctors. The truth is, both of these diseases are more likely sets of symptoms related to a more complex systemic problem, but nonetheless, the debilitating symptoms are not psychosomatic.

More research is needed to determine the definitive cause or causes of Morgellons. It may have one cause, but it is quite likely to be a combination of a fungal disease and a bacterial or parasitic condition. When the immune system is compromised, multiple, simultaneous infections are common.

Morgellons Treatment

Doctors who believe the disease is caused by a parasite are treating patients with anti-parasitic pharmaceuticals. Those who believe the cause to be bacterial are treating with antibiotics. And those who believe the problem to be fungal are treating with anti-fungal medications.

Alternative treatments range from colloidal silver to strange concoctions of borax and dishwashing soap.

Recovery of health, regardless of the manifestation of disease, begins by flooding the body with the nutrients it needs to heal while detoxing. A truly healthy diet with lots of raw, organic produce will help the body to detoxify and eliminate parasites while regenerating the immune system. Disease starts in the gut. Balancing the ecosystem inside the gut heals the body. How to Detoxify From Antibiotics and Other Chemical Antimicrobials

Antibiotics and other antimicrobials are everywhere. Even if you are trying to avoid them, they are found in the majority of conventional meats, in our tap water, and in soaps, mouthwash, and toothpaste. It is difficult to avoid exposure, but the effort is a worthwhile endeavor.

Antibiotics Used in Meat Operations

It is estimated that more than 70% of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used by agricultural operations. These antibiotics are rarely used on sick animals; they are routinely used in livestock’s feed and water as a preventative measure. This practice allows overcrowding and unsanitary conditions to remain profitable for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations or CAFOs. Antibiotics are used in such high amounts that antibiotic residues can remain in the meat. Conventional meats are tested for “acceptable levels”.

Contaminated Tap Water

Antibiotics, other medications, and antibacterial soaps eventually find their way into our tap water. When our bodies eliminate waste, medications like antibiotics are flushed down the drain as well. Many contaminants such as solid waste are removed from the water in water treatment facilities, but these facilities do not remove medications from the water. Eventually the water is recycled back into the water supply. The amount of pharmaceuticals found in tap water is extremely low, but this still equates to exposure, and many suspect that this contamination could create new antibiotic resistant bacteria.

What Makes Antibacterial Soaps Antibacterial

Some of the most common antimicrobials added to antibacterial soaps are triclosan and triclocarban. These chemicals originally used in hospital settings are now found in all kinds of products. There is a growing concern that these chemicals create antibiotic resistant bacteria, but there are other problems associated with triclosan.

Triclosan acts as an endocrine disruptor in animal studies; it interferes with thyroid hormones. If it works in a similar fashion in humans, this could lead to serious health problems such as obesity, infertility, and even cancer.

Unfortunately these are not all of the problems associated with triclosan. Another study found triclosan interferes with muscle contractions in animals and in human muscle cells. This is of particular concern because the chemical penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream more easily than originally thought. A 2008 study done by the CDC detected triclosan in the urine of 75% of the people tested. Antibacterial soaps are the kinds of soaps most commonly found in public restrooms, but triclosan is also found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and even yoga mats.

Heal Your Gut

After taking antibiotics or being exposed to antimicrobials you should take steps to restore healthy bacteria in your gut. Healthy bacteria is crucial to maintaining the balance between bacteria and fungi in our gut. Candida commonly mass produces after healthy bacteria have been killed off. A diet high in prebiotics and probiotics with foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, homemade unsweetened yogurt, and homemade unsweetened kefir can be helpful for restoring healthy bacteria (though bear in mind our stomach acid is designed to kill bacteria, including that found in probiotics). Even more importantly, a diet high in raw produce, more vegetables than fruits, is essential for restoring healthy intestinal flora. See the first source below for more on the proper diet. The way to detoxify from everything in this toxic world starts with a healthy diet that primarily consists of raw, fresh, organic produce.

Beneficial bacteria serve many crucial functions. So far, we have identified more than 1,000 different species of beneficial bacteria in our bodies. They help us digest our food and to create and synthesize vitamins. Beneficial microbes help to fight off invading pathogens, to synthesize neurotransmitters, and more. The healthier the food we eat, the healthier and more beneficial the bacteria inside of us.

Conclusion

Antibiotics and antimicrobials like triclosan are indiscriminate killers. They kill beneficial bacteria as well as harmful bacteria. Avoid exposure to these substances whenever possible. If you’ve recently taken prescription antibiotics, check out After Taking Antibiotics… for more information, with specific protocols and supplement recommendations. How to Detox Your Easter Candy Candida

If you’ve eaten sweets over the holidays and you are ready to detox, your goal will be to kill Candida and re-balance your gut flora. First and foremost, it’s time for salads. Unless you want to spend considerable money on probiotics for the rest of your life, if you want to be free of Candida, you need to feed the right ecosystem. That means sticking to a diet consisting of lots of raw fresh organic vegetables, void of processed, refined foods. Your intestinal flora affects your life in many different ways. The more raw vegetables you ingest, the more beneficial your gut microbes are to your body. Avoid gluten as well.

If you went way overboard with junk food (and/or had conventional junk food as opposed to organic, healthier varieties), you’re looking at artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and GMO’s. The good news is, the best way to detox these ingredients is to fix the gut.

Probiotics

The probiotics we take as supplements are not the same probiotics that we keep in our gut, but they are friendly bacteria. Before they decide to check out, they will fight on the side of our beneficial microbes, kill the bad guys, eat the bad stuff, and help digest everything so that the long-term bacteria that prefer to live in our gut will thrive.

The bacteria count is not what’s important when looking for probiotics. You want to make sure the bacteria are designed to pass through the stomach acid. Most are not. Stomach acid is designed to kill bacteria, so it takes a strong beneficial bacteria to make it through.

Other herbal medicines that kill Candida internally include (but are not limited to) wormwood extract, oil of oregano, garlic, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and undecenoic acid. But don’t take probiotics with antibacterial herbs. Oil of oregano, for example, can weaken probiotics when they are taken together.

I like fermented vegetables, but I don’t eat them for probiotic properties. I believe the beneficial bacteria from fermented foods is killed in stomach acid. Fermented foods have tons of benefits, and they’re great to take with more powerful probiotics. When the foods hit the gut, the healthy bacteria that made it through has lots of healthy food on which to feed.

Yogurts bought in grocery stores make poor probiotics and typically feed Candida rather than kill it. On the other hand, high quality probiotics can be added to yogurts. Choose yogurt that is organic and free of sugar. Sweetened with fruit if desired.

Eat Salads

Salads are the best way to feed the body a variety of the healthiest foods for balancing the intestinal flora. We’re not talking about iceberg lettuce, some carrot shreds, and ranch dressing. We’re talking about real salads made with kale, collards, cabbage, spinach, chard, and lots of other leafy vegetables to make up the foundation of your daily salad. Add herbs and garlic to them as well.

Conclusion

Those who eat reasonably well on non-holidays and were not suffering from Candida symptoms previously should be able to fix the gut after an Easter candy binge in just a few days by sticking to salads, lots of water, and a high quality probiotic. Be sure to check out Kill Candida and Balance the Body, and see Cheap and Easy Detox for more on detoxifying.
