Reasons Not To Vaccinate

We cannot prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that vaccines do more harm than good anymore than anyone else can prove that they are beneficial. There are too many variables. But to say that there is nothing to worry about with vaccines is to bury one’s head in the sand.

Vaccine companies are corrupt. They lobby for new laws preventing lawsuits for vaccine damages. They ship vaccines they find to be tainted, contaminated, or otherwise compromised to developing nations under the guise of being altruistic. They lobby to pass laws forcing vaccines on people, even when the majority of healthcare practitioners state that the vaccine is completely unnecessary. They test dangerous concoctions on the military (soldiers don’t get to choose which vaccines they will receive and some have had dire consequences before being pulled). They continue to add more and more vaccines to the vaccine schedule (recommended vaccines), overloading children at an early age. Some children are receiving as many as 24 shots within their first two years of age. And to top it off, they continue to lobby to try to make vaccines mandatory for all United States citizens. Fortunately, unlike the previous laws they have successfully lobbied to pass, they are yet to have luck with this one.

Vaccinations Cause Injury

We have more vaccinations on our schedule than any other country. We also have one of the highest infant mortality rates and one of the highest newborn death rates among industrialized nations. We also have the highest rate of autism.

Only Latvia, with six deaths per 1,000 live births, has a higher death rate for newborns than the United States, which is tied near the bottom of industrialized nations with Hungary, Malta, Poland, and Slovakia with five deaths per 1,000 births.” – CNN

The United States has the highest number of mandated vaccines for children under 5 in the world (36, double the Western world average of 18), the highest autism rate in the world (1 in 150 children, 10 times or more the rate of some other Western countries), but only places 34th in the world for its children under 5 mortality rate.” – Generation Rescue

Our autism rates, along with many other neurological disorders that can be attributed to the preservatives in vaccinations, are skyrocketing with a direct and very clear correlation to the number of immunizations children are receiving. Anyone who reads the studies can plainly see this. Our brains aren’t working well. While this can be attributed to many factors, studies are being ignored or manipulated in order to hide the truth and keep the profits flowing.

We are obviously doing something wrong.

Fortunately, today, pretty much everyone knows that vaccinations can cause autism and other neurological disorders. This is in stark contrast to just a few years ago when I would write a Facebook post about how vaccines can cause these injuries, and I would be flooded with comments telling me how wrong I was. Since then the CDC and even a few heads of the vaccine companies now admit that these injuries are happening. Julie Gerberding, back when she was the director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control, confirmed to CBS News:

…if you’re predisposed with the mitochondrial disorder, it can certainly set off some damage. Some of the symptoms can be symptoms that have characteristics of autism.”

Now Julie is the President of Merck’s Vaccines Division. No surprise there!

If you’ve ever read the forms required before getting vaccinated, you know the dangers, and you know the drug companies and hospitals are aware of the dangers. We also have the pharmaceutical companies spending millions of dollars every year lobbying in order to get bills passed that make it impossible to hold them legally responsible for any of their vaccine damages as they continue to push more and more new and obviously unnecessary vaccines on us. With 1 out of 150 children affected by autism, according to the National Vaccine Information Center, just imagine how many injuries we don’t know about. Imagine how many children learn everything more slowly, how many children end up with ADHD and dyslexia because of vaccines. How many children are deemed troublemakers and are thought to be unwilling to learn because they can’t learn the way other children do, due to vaccines? And how many children progress significantly slower in so many ways thanks to vaccinations?

And many of the reports, even from the CDC’s own website, show that the likelihood of vaccine injuries are greater than the likelihood of getting the disease the immunization is intended to prevent. Take the DPT vaccine for instance. The chances of a serious adverse reaction are one in 1750, while the chances of dying from pertussis are one in several million. Another example is the HPV vaccine. They tried to pass law forcing young girls (starting at 11) to receive this vaccination. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease and the infections in young women are temporary and have little to no long-term significance.

How many people have you heard of that got sick because they did not vaccinate?

Vaccinations and Eradication of Disease

Many people in the natural health community will agree that drug companies are corrupt and that the number of vaccines recommended for people is ridiculous and dangerous. They will typically contend that most of today’s vaccines likely do more harm than good. The educated ones will often point to the chickenpox and the measles vaccine and agree that these are obviously totally unnecessary, historically ineffectual, and not worth the risks. But many still argue in favor of the efficacy of the smallpox and polio vaccines.

Diseases run their course. Eventually, a natural immunity develops or the species becomes extinct. There is considerable evidence that this was a contributing factor with smallpox and polio. In addition, health plays a huge role in disease prevention. It’s simple. The cleaner the water and food supply is, the healthier the people are, the better their bodies are at defending against disease. It’s a logical, but typically ignored, fact.

Was Poliovirus Eradicated with Immunization?

Historical documents show a decline in polio cases after the introduction of the poliovirus vaccine for four reasons:

1. Improvements in sewage and water systems. Polio is spread via feces/oral route, and sanitation policies clearly played a major role in the decline of polio. In every case of polio outbreaks, unsanitary conditions were the cause of the epidemic.

If the poliovirus vaccine is responsible for eradicating polio in our country,  then why is the poliovirus still prevalent in India, the Congo, and many African countries? There are still outbreaks after years and years of annual polio vaccine campaigns. This is due to a lack of sanitation and due to the vaccine itself. Wherever people use waterways for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and for sewage, polio will never go away.

2. The criteria for diagnosing the poliovirus changed. Doctors trusted vaccines to the point that they mis-diagnosed polio patients if they had been previously vaccinated. Instead, these well-meaning doctors attributed the symptoms to other diseases.

3. Before vaccinations, many doctors diagnosed anyone and everyone with polio-like symptoms as having poliovirus, regardless of the fact that other viruses like Coxsackie, echo, and enteroviruses can also cause long-term paralysis,

4. And last, but certainly not least, polio cases were already on the decline dramatically before the vaccine was introduced.

So during the peak of polio, everyone with polio-like symptoms was said to have the poliovirus. After sanitation programs began, cases of polio dropped significantly. Next, immunization began. Then there was another drop because everyone with polio-like symptoms, including those with polio, was said not to have the poliovirus.

Polio is long-term paralysis caused by the poliovirus and other diseases as well. Prior to 1954, the following undoubtedly hid behind the name “poliomyelitis”: Transverse Myelitis, viral or “aseptic” meningitis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)- (what Franklin Delano Roosevelt had)[4], Chinese Paralytic syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, epidemic cholera, cholera morbus, spinal meningitis, spinal apoplexy, inhibitory palsy, intermittent fever, famine fever, worm fever, bilious remittent fever, ergotism, post-polio syndrome, acute flaccid paralysis(AFP).” – Suzanne Humphries, MD

Now the CDC reports that out of 162 confirmed cases of  paralytic polio, eight were contracted outside of the United States and 154 cases were actually caused by the vaccine itself. Mainstream-media is reporting that the polio vaccine campaign in India was a success. But there are 47,500 new cases of non-polio acute flaccid paralysis, which is caused by the polio vaccine and is said to be clinically indistinguishable from polio paralysis but twice as deadly.

Are Immunizations Responsible for the Eradication of Smallpox?

Many people point to the WHO Smallpox Eradication Programme that started in 1967. Initially, immunizing everyone with the vaccine was the plan, but it proved too difficult to implement and the idea was abandoned in favor of surveillance and containment.

This involved trained workers searching for cases, with rewards for those who found them. Cases and their contacts were then isolated; contacts were vaccinated.” – History Today

When Japan started compulsory vaccinations in 1892, they saw yearly increases in smallpox infections. In twenty years, there were 29,979 deaths from smallpox, and all of these people had been vaccinated.

In the Philippines, 8 million people received 24.5 million vaccinations (95% of their population). What followed was their worst smallpox epidemic ever with a quadrupled death rate.

In England, before 1853, the largest known  smallpox death count for a two-year period was approximately 2,000. Shortly after England’s compulsory vaccination , the death rate in England and Wales began to climb. In 1870 and 1871, the death rate peaked at more than 23,000 smallpox deaths. When the City of Leicester, England stopped vaccinating for smallpox between 1882 and 1908, they saw a remarkable reduction in cases compared to the rest of England.

In 1871, Bavarian cases of smallpox deaths totaled 30,742,. Of the dead, 29,429 had been vaccinated.

Polio, and virtually every other contagious epidemic disease for which we vaccinate. is spread by unsanitary conditions to people with poor health. Better sanitation reduced the occurrence of smallpox and polio, not vaccinations. The studies show us that, too often, the people who suffer from these diseases have either been vaccinated themselves, or they caught the disease from someone else who had been vaccinated.

One of the great triumphs of medical science is said to involve the eradication of smallpox. The fact that it was in decline before mass vaccination was instituted is conveniently forgotten, as are the many cases of fully immunized individuals contracting the disease.” – Vaccination and Immunization: Dangers, Delusions and Alternatives by Leon Chaitow.

The risks involved in smallpox inoculation are fairly well known. The United States government asked doctors to stop routine smallpox vaccinations in 1972. For some previous years, the only known cases of infection with smallpox were people who had been vaccinated. On top of that the vaccine is the most reactive of all and has been linked to the most serious side effects including death. It is also noted in many medical reports that people who receive the vaccine are not necessarily less likely to get smallpox, they are simply more likely to survive smallpox. This contradicts studies that report cases of smallpox deaths. When countries were doing compulsory vaccinations for smallpox, the death rate for those who received the vaccinations was as high or almost as high as the death rate for the non-vaccinated who contracted the disease.

Are Any Vaccinations Responsible for Eliminating Disease?

We could write about every single vaccine out on the market (if we wanted a 50 page article), and the story would be the same with the same answer. The answer is “no.” Sometimes we found graphs that make it look as though a disease was eliminated by immunizations, only to find that the graph has been manipulated. For instance, if you start a graph close to when a vaccine is administered to many people, it usually looks as though the vaccine had an effect on the infectious disease, when in fact, if you look back a few more years, it turns out that these diseases were already on a drastic decline. Time and time again, sanitation efforts increase (as they should when a population of people are getting sick) right before the drop in numbers.

smallpox and vaccines introductionThe chart above is an example of a smallpox chart (from tetrahedron.org) made to look as though a smallpox vaccine did its job by starting the chart at a date well past when the disease began its decline (click to see full size).

But many other charts show an entirely different story.

VaccinationChart

Disease is spread when a population of poor, unhealthy people drink, cook, and bathe in water contaminated with sewage. Historically, when the disease begins to spread beyond the borders of the poor communities, people are quarantined and the communities are cleaned up and sanitized. This is when the disease declines within the population. Then a vaccine comes along, there is a bump in the amount of people infected due to the vaccine, but because money is involved, the reporting gets skewed and the vaccine takes all the credit.

A Dirty Business

Earlier this month, (July 2013), the CDC posted a page on their website stating that more than 98 million Americans received one or more doses of the polio vaccine within an 8-year time span in which a portion of the vaccines contained a cancer causing polyomavirus known as SV40. The page was quickly pulled down. In May of 2010, federal health authorities recommended that doctors suspend the use of Rotarix, one of two vaccines licensed in the United States against rotavirus, because the vaccine was contaminated with material from a pig virus. In 2009, Baxter flu vaccines were contaminated with H5N1. Vaccines have been contaminated with HIV. The list goes on. Often times when the contamination is found, the vaccines are shipped to third world countries and administered there. No lawsuits. No liability.

Mainstream Media Vaccination Scandals

Drug companies, time and time again, commit atrocities. We rarely hear about them because drug companies to a large extent control our mainstream media, but we do have a few videos from mainstream media that cover vaccine industry corruption.

The first video is a news story about how Bayer and the U.S. Government knowingly gave HIV tainted vaccinations to children. This is no surprise to us, except that the mainstream media actually covered it!

We force immigrants to get needless vaccinations thanks to Merck’s lobbying.

This video talks about how the swine flu pandemic never was an actual pandemic.

For every story that the mainstream media exposes, imagine how many are covered up.

Residual cell culture materialsEgg proteinTo grow enough of the virus or bacteria to make the vaccine
Residual inactivating ingredientsFormaldehydeTo kill viruses or inactivate toxins during the manufacturing process
Residual antibioticsPenicillin, sulfa drugsTo prevent contamination by bacteria during the vaccine manufacturing process

For some time it seemed many people thought mercury was removed from all vaccines. Not true. Thimersosal is mercury and it is still a major ingredient in many vaccinations. After years of denying the connection between mercury and autism, routinely used children’s vaccines (except for flu shots) in the United States no longer contain thimerosal.

The rest of the ingredients don’t look so good either. You don’t have to be a scientist to understand that formaldehyde, aluminum, and mercury are very toxic to us. Ammonium sulfate can be found in the DTaP, DPT, HiB vaccines, all of which are routinely given to babies. Ammonium (basically positively charged ammonia), monosodium glutamate, potassium monophosphate, diphosphate, and phenoxyethanol (antifreeze) are other common and toxic ingredients found in vaccines, including children’s shots. If one were to suggest ingesting the same quantity of these ingredients found in a single vaccine, in any other way other than a vaccine, virtually every single doctor in the country would tell you that this could be extremely hazardous to your health. But put it in a vaccine, and inject it directly your blood stream, and suddenly these preservatives become inconsequential.

Vegan Issues

Flu and measles shots contain chick embryo and embryonic fluid. Vaccines cultured in human diploid cells that come from aborted human fetal tissue include Hepatitis A, RotaTeq, Varicella (chickenpox), Rubella, and Mump inoculations. Flu and mump shots are made in chicken eggs. Monkey kidney cells are used to create Polio vaccines. Other ingredients from animal byproducts include gelatin serums and guinea pig embryo cells.

Questions to Ask Yourself

If vaccines immunize, why must we keep taking them?

If vaccines are safe, why are laws being passed to protect the drug companies from any liability?

Do you trust these companies with your life and the lives of your children?

Do drug companies that create vaccines have any financial incentive to make the population healthy?

The Bottom Line

Vaccines are killing and damaging people. The drug companies do not care about our health. In fact, it behooves them not to heal us. This has been proven so many times, over and over again with scandal after scandal. It’s all about profit.

Even if the efficacy of vaccinations could be proven throughout history, we cannot recommend anyone inject something directly into their bloodstream that is sourced from corporations that have proven time and time again that they do not care about our health and wellbeing.

Upgrade Your Food Choices

You’re slightly confused. You are not sure who to believe. You are ready to start, but not ready to commit to the whole enchilada. You wonder how you can possibly obtain some free nuggets that will help set you on a track to health, without breaking the bank. I will tell you what you can do. You can learn how to get healthy, and stay on track, by transitioning your food to better options, that don’t insult your taste buds and your account manager.

So how do you get healthy without falling off the wagon?

You stop ingesting toxic ingredients and transition to higher quality foods you can enjoy, so you can stay the course and continue to upgrade your health as you you continue to be empowered on how to get healthy.

Let’s get started.

Ingredients To Avoid

ingredientsThere are several toxic ingredients that are hidden in packaged foods that you have no idea are causing you harm.  How would you know if you either don’t read labels closely or don’t know what you are looking for?

Well, a lot of the confusion has been taken out of what ingredients to avoid, from this A to Z list. This list is very comprehensive, and I would suggest you avoid these ingredients as much as possible, to slow down and ultimately stop the ingestion of toxic ingredients that are damaging your body.

So now that you are aware of what ingredients to avoid in order to get healthy, let’s look at some transition foods.

Grains & Starches

gluten freeWe love wheat.  So much that we typically have it in every meal.  From our toast, cereal, bagel, pop tart, whatever…to our sandwich, pasta, pizza, and wraps.  Not to mention plenty of of other places it shows up.

If it’s not wheat, its potatoes. Easy to grow, cheap, and fill the stomach.  The North American dream meal!

The problem with wheat aside from gluten intolerances is that we ingest it in incredibly large amounts, in an non-organic form, and leave it to be assimilated by a digestive system void of a healthy ecosystem, which in turn results in large, undigested particles that eventually render themselves toxic.

Potatoes are difficult to assimilate as well and often have a nice dose of chemicals on them, including fungicide. Rice is often not much better.

So what transition ‘grains’ should you consider as an upgrade?

  • Try quinoa (keen-wa), an ancient grain with lots of protein.  Easy on the palate and easier on the stomach (rinse, then soak in clean water first for at least 2 hours first).
  • If you need to make a crust, bread, or cookie, try alternate flours like quinoa, amaranth, kamut, coconut, and almond. They don’t alter the taste much, and are generally easier on the stomach.
  • If you want potatoes, eat the red skinned kind and make sure they are as organic as possible. Even better, try sweet potatoes which offer much more nutrition.

Animal Protein

People will sometimes tell you to get healthy you are basically stuck with fruits and vegetables.  Although this has merit, it’s not entirely true.

The problem is with what they call ‘meat’ (like hot dogs for example), the cleanliness of it, and eating too much.

The only real meat you should avoid altogether is anything that comes from a swine. It’s not sanitary and the human body lacks the enzyme to actually digest it. You should avoid it at all costs if you want to get healthy.

So what transition ‘meats’ should you consider as an upgrade?

  •  Your best choice is grass fed organic beef (to avoid intaking the grains for reasons mentioned above) as it contains many more nutrients and is easier on the body.
  • Your next best choice is fish, caught from an unpolluted source that is not chock full of mercury.
  • Finally, organic free range chickens (vegetable fed) are a better choice than the caged, heavily inoculated kind.

If you think your hormones are out of balance (mood swings, stubborn weight), a lot of it can occur from hormones and other toxins injected into the meat you consume, which in turn puts yours out of balance. You can’t get healthy be eating these types of meats.

Dairy

Cow’s milk is such a favourite.  We’ve been led to believe it is the purest and only form of calcium on the planet, and if we don’t eat it we are all doomed to broken bones, osteoporosis, and can never get healthy.

The truth is, conventional dairy is very harmful to the digestive system as it is mucous forming, mostly pasteurized, full of hormones, and is actually acidic in nature.  That’s no way to get healthy.

Another ‘dairy’ product people enjoy is margarine.  Margarine became a popular alternative to butter when it got the bad rap, but since then, we have realized margarine is one molecule removed from plastic and largely undigestible.

Finally, lets not forget cheese, the add on to everything.  Hard cheese is another mucous forming food that causes digestive upset.

So what transition ‘dairy’ should you consider as an upgrade?

  • Coconut milk, almond milk, or hemp milk, preferably organic.  Check out these recipes.
  • Raw organic cows milk if you can handle it.
  • Choose organic butter, unpasteurized if you can, as it is way better than margarine.
  • Choose raw cheeses that contain bacterial cultures and are more digestible than their counterpart, hard cheese.

Note I did NOT include soy milk.  Even though it was touted as THE alternative source, it’s widely known in health circles that soy is ONLY healthy if its organic, non-GMO, and fermented.  I don’t know of any widely available soy milk that has any of these characteristics to date, so you can’t get healthy drinking it.

Fats

Fats have received a bad rap, but as with any essential nutrient, it’s the form of it that’s the issue.

Most fats you are ingesting are trans or hydrogenated fats, which are damaging to many parts of your body, including your cardiovascular system.  These are found mostly in processed and packaged foods due to their extended shelf life.

Good fats help with many functions, including the brain’s.  Want to get smarter? Increase your beneficial fat intake.

So what transition fats should you consider as an upgrade?

  • Coconut oil is BY FAR the all around healthiest fat you can take.  It is anti-bacterial and extremely healing. Try it for cooking, in smoothies, and even baking in place of margarine or conventional butter.
  • Olive oil is also a good fat to ingest, with antibacterial qualities as well. But you need to navigate between the good and the bad.
  • Also try hemp oil and avocado oil which are loaded with healthy fats.

Sugar

The darling of the masses…everything is sweeter with sugar!

It’s not that sugar in and of itself is ‘bad’, it’s just that we eat too much of it in a bastardized form and it feeds Candida, an issue for 80% of the population. Not only that, it has caused other health issues like obesity and diabetes.

When choosing sugar, limit your intake.  Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) or any corn syrup for that matter, and limit your intake of the white refined stuff. You can’t get healthy by eating refined sugar.

So what transition ‘sugars’ should you consider to upgrade?

  • Try stevia or xylitol (non-GMO from birch), natural sweeteners with no glycemic index value. They work well in smoothies, teas, and some baking.
  • Use coconut sugar, a sugar with a malty taste that is very low on the glycemic index.
  • Consider yacon or lakanto.
  • Lastly, try raw cane sugar in place of white sugar as another alternative.

Salt

Salt has become the obsession with people starting to take care of their health, and all the talk is about how to reduce it.  The fact is, you require salt and its nutrients for many of your body’s processes to take place and to get healthy.

However, the majority of people are consuming processed table salt, that has been stripped of its spectrum of nutrients and has added chemicals in the process. This salt has little benefits, and you should limit your intake of it until you don’t consume it at all.

So what transition ‘salts’ should you consider to upgrade?

  • Use a full spectrum sea salt (pink himalayan sea salt is a good choice) that still contains all the essential nutrients of salt, so you can apply liberally to your food as you would table salt so you can get the taste AND the minerals.

Snacks

Snacks…the focal point of our gluttony.  The snack industry has capitalized on our desire to graze, but has generally made us fatter and more unhealthy than ever before.  This is one of the primary stumbling blocks when trying to get healthy.

The problem with most snacks is that they are full of hydrogenated oils, harmful salt, MSG, HFCS, GMO’s, dyes and colours, wax, and non-organic grains and starches. It’s a digestive nightmare and a dead end road if you want to get healthy.

Some newer “healthier” snacks have come to the forefront, but many of them in fact are not much better than their counterparts.  It’s important to read the top ingredients to avoid above, to understand what is in your snack food and what it is doing to your health.

So what transition “snacks: should you consider to upgrade?

  • The only snack that I have found that you could truly enjoy the taste and still feel great about the ingredients is Way Better Snacks which offers a largely organic and sprouted snack that tastes delicious.

Beverages

Two beverages that are crippling our nation can both be made much healthier – soda and coffee.

People are consuming soda at an alarming rate, with little to no idea of how it is slowly destroying multiple areas of the body. Coffee is a 1-5 cup a day habit that is not going away and as a result we are more high strung, anxious, and jittery. You can’t get healthy drinking either conventional versions.

However, both offer alternatives that can allow you to transition to a much better habit.

So what transition “beverages” should you consider for an upgrade?

  • If you really need to wean yourself off soda, or replace it with a better habit, try Zevia.  It’s sweetened with stevia and the ingredients are much less harmful than regular soda.
  • If you love the taste of coffee, but realize that the side effects are much more damaging than you would like to admit, try SereniGy healthy coffee which gives you your coffee, without the side effects.

Transition is Important

There is a lot of information out there on what to avoid, what to eat, and which are the best products out there. This can be very overwhelming and lead people to give up before they even really start.

The purpose of this article is to provide you with some easy transitions that will keep you on the wagon until you are ready to introduce a higher level of nutrition that involves considerably more fruits and vegetables, super foods, high quality herbs and supplements, and processes that improve the digestibility and nutrients of everything (like fermenting).

Until then, transition as many of the above categories you can, preferably the ones you consume the most, and get ready to progress to the next level when you are ready to feel even better!

Tips to Keep Kids Thinking Green

When I was growing up, the health of the environment was far from top of mind. The world I knew and played in every day was taken for granted. When I had my own children, I became a little more environmentally astute. I started with recycling, hoping that engaging my children in that practice, might have an impact. As my awareness evolved, I realized the important role parents play in educating their children on ways to preserve their future and their world.

child-recycling

Environmental educator David Sobel said, “One transcendent experience in nature is worth a thousand nature facts.” Studies have shown that when children are connected to nature between the ages of 5 and 10, they’re more likely to develop more compassion about their environment, a compassion they’ll likely carry throughout their lives. So what can you do to help your child develop an interest in environmental preservation? The following steps show how easy it can be!

Create a Nature Trip

Go for a nature walk, picking up cans, bottles, paper along the way, all of which can be recycled. This exercise will raise awareness about the damage from littering and encourage personal responsibility for keeping the earth clean. A nature field trip is also a great way to motivate children to ask questions about flowers, birds, trees, and more. The more children know about the life cycle, the more interested they will become in preserving it.

Start a Garden

young truck farmerGetting kids involved in the food that comes into the house naturally improves their food choices, thus reducing the risk of obesity. Further, teaching kids to garden and allowing them to choose what vegetables they would like to grow, encourages healthy eating habits and a dedication to locally grown, seasonal foods.

Visit a Recycling Plant

Try taking your children to a recycling plant where they can witness the recycling process from garbage to product. Many plants offer tours, so check your local community.  Kids will find it fascinating, and they will better understand the importance of recycling.

Create a Compost Bin

Composting is an ideal way to instill a sense of environmental advocacy in children. No matter where you live, you can compost. Plus, kids love it! Composting is such a great exercise for kids because they can witness the entire cycle of the food off their plate (that would normally go into a landfill) into useful soil that is garden ready. By composting, children will learn to value organic wastes as a resource instead of thinking it is useless garbage. Composting is a great way to empower your children by helping them understand how their actions can have a positive effect on the environment.

Turn Off Lights and Preserve Water

Kids are notorious for leaving lights on, and as they advance into the junior high years, showers go on forever. The best way to teach children the value of saving resources is to make a game of it. For example, every time a light is left on or a shower goes beyond a certain limit, they have to put 5 cents in a jar for each slip-up. Conversely, if they haven’t left any lights on and have honored the water limitation, 5 cents goes in to the family jar. At the end of the month, the family can select a fun way to spend the money, maybe even donate it to an environmental effort.

Remember, children want to help. And if they can do something that grownups do, they’re in.  Not only will you be teaching by example, you’ll be allowing them to get involved and connected to Mother Earth. They’re never too young or too old to for you to teach them about the value of preserving their planet for their future.

Healthy Soil for Growing Food

Soil 101 – Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K)

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the three main staples, the top three macro nutrients, of any soil and any garden. They are essential for plant growth, so keeping them at the correct levels is very important. But how the hell do you get these three elements into your soil?

Let’s start with number one, nitrogen.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is indeed the number one constituent for healthy growth in your plants. It is what basically makes up chlorophyll and it gives us that fresh green colour in our plants. It is a huge part of our atmospheric surrounds, but it cannot be utilised in this form by plants, which I’ll explain more about later in “nitrogen fixing”.

Nitrogen comes in both natural and synthetic forms, the latter being common commercial fertilisers and common shelf products like urea. The problem with these synthetic forms (besides the massive amount of oil that go into their manufacture) is the overdose amounts a lot of farmers dump on their crops.

Yes, you can have too much nitrogen. This excess simply runs off and eventually seeps into the soil where it joins the ground water and contaminates it. It will usually be marketed as a “nitrate” or “sulphate”. Often, crops that have been over fertilised with nitrogen lack stability and the rapid green growth of the plant soon outweighs its lagging root system, much like the legs of a commercial chicken. The plant eventually gives way and generally dies off, usually with a good amount of burning appearing on the leaves as well.

If there isn’t enough nitrogen in the soil, the opposite can happen. The leaves/plants won’t grow. Their existing leaves will turn a patchy yellow colour and they’ll soon die off randomly.

Well, that all sounds rather bleak doesn’t it? How then do you get nitrogen into your soil naturally and organically? I’m glad you asked.

One lovely example is through “nitrogen fixing”, through “weeds” like clover or legumes such as peas, beans etc. What these wonderful plants do is fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to the ground in tiny nodules on their root systems, which are actually symbiotic bacteria called rhizobia. This bacteria is behind the actual process of fixing the gas to the plant. When the plant dies, this fixed nitrogen is released into the soil as it breaks down and can be taken up by other plants.

We can take advantage of this process by planting beans, peas etc in our garden beds from the onset, After they’ve grown, we can simply cut them off at the base and let the root systems break down into the soil, the top half we can compost or put back onto the beds to break down,  after you’ve harvested your peas/beans of course!

I even plant broad beans around my fruit trees in winter. This way I get a crop of beans, the tree’s root system benefits from the beans’ root system breaking down, and the plant itself contributes to the mulch.

I still follow the guidelines of crop rotation with my beans and peas, I try to cycle the type of pea/bean I plant on a four year rotation. So if I plant peas under one tree or in one bed, I won’t plant those peas there for another four years, This reduces the risk of pest and disease build up in the ground.

Other sources of nitrogen include, compost, manure, lawn clippings, blood and bone. See the end of the article for directions.

Phosphorus

Around 75-80% of phosphorus that is mined today is used to make commercial fertiliser as it is most common in solid form. See what I mean about oil/mining being a big player in the fertiliser industry? Phosphate occurs naturally after the breaking down of plant (and animal) matter so composts can be a good source of it, as the whole phosphorus cycle is a very slow one.

Regular introduction of compost can keep phosphorus at good levels. If you have low levels of it in your garden, the effects will be obvious. Your plants will hardly flower and leaves can take on an unnatural green tinge or darken off. Phosphorus is the “building block” of your plant’s growth system, which it takes in through its root system. So it’s important to have good amounts of it in there.

Phosphorous: Compost, manure, blood and bone. See the end of the article for directions.

Potassium

Commonly referred to as potash, this is what your plants and trees need to produce abundant flowers and in turn, fruit. It is also the main nutrient that plants use to get water from the soil and keep it in their leaves and stems. Prior to flowering, many gardeners will sprinkle a small handful of potash around the drip line of their trees (or any plant that produces through flowering) to increase the amount of blossom it produces. Potassium is also commonly labelled as potassium sulphate, though the organic gardener wouldn’t touch it in this form.

Most find that they don’t need to specifically add potassium to their gardens as it occurs naturally in manures and most organic fertilisers, though in small amounts (2-5%). It’s usually enough for the soil to get its fix if added at regular intervals. Blood and bone, rock minerals, potash, and wood ash all contain potassium that will be slowly absorbed into the soil.

Plants that are deficient in potassium will yellow slightly at the leaf edges. A good percentage will simply die off.

Good sources of potassium: manure, potash, blood and bone, rock minerals.

How to Add These Nutrients to Your Garden

Compost and manure can be added to a depth of say 2” on your beds or roughly 3-4 shovel fulls per square metre. You can turn it all over if you like, I prefer to leave it in layers (like lasagna) and let the plants do the work.

For blood and bone, add one handful per square metre. For potash, mix 1 tablespoon in 9 litres of water added to the beds. (This will work great).

For rock minerals, 1-2 handfuls per square metre is what you’ll need.

By rejuvenating your soil after each season with things like compost, manures, and a good handful of blood and bone per square metre, you’ll keep your NPK levels at their best and the results will show in what you grow.  These top three are the main constituents with your soil structure. There are other macro nutrients and micro nutrients that are also found in there as well, but as a rule of thumb, if you look after your NPK, everything else will fall into line. Happy gardening!

Healing Barriers – Top 5

Bring up the subject of being able to heal yourself and you often will get looked at like you are either clinically insane or have just been dropped off by Alf. People are not yet ready to believe that the body is indeed capable of healing itself, which shows a complete lack of gratitude for the infinite intelligence it contains and the daily actions it completes for us. You know, the heart beating, lungs breathing, organs functioning, muscles twitching, neurotransmitters firing…all those things we don’t need to know how to do because our body takes care of it. So how can the body complete all these tasks, but not be able to heal itself? The answer lies between your ears, and it’s time for some rewiring. To be clear, I’m referring to your beliefs. The things that guide your actions, bring about your reality, and are backed up by your opinions. Sometimes we need to question our beliefs, in order to grow and expand. This is an opportunity to do just that.

#1 – Belief You Are Healthy (when you are not)

As long are you have the belief that you are already healthy, you will NEVER be able to heal.

Since definitions will vary, for the sake of this article, let’s assume that healthy is a body free of any disease or discord. Disease includes chronic lack of energy, sleep, aches, pains, headaches, digestion issues, skin issues, libido problems, and nagging coughs, colds, flu’s, sore throats, and general stomach upset. Unfortunately, this eliminates 97% of the population.

Even if you have managed to stop the disease process, and have eliminated toxins from your diet and are eating clean and healthy food, you still have to uproot the deep seated challenges that are holding you back from true health. Otherwise, your body is still circulating contaminants often rooted in your digestive system through blood circulation that ends up infecting your organs, muscles, tissues, and bones on a daily basis.

In other words, you may have cleaned up your engine and are using premium fuel, but as long as really old, dirty oil keeps circulating through it, your vehicles performance will always be compromised.

I have seen many people claim that they are healthy, but their actions, body signals, and general appearance often say the opposite. This is not to say that these people are not doing a great job of currently feeding their system and that they are very passionate about their health (which I applaud), But if we do truly want to be healthy we need to look in the mirror and be straight with ourselves (and not stress out about it) and evaluate our true level of health.

Once we have done this, and we realize that we are indeed not as healthy as we would like, then the door opens and allows the right information to flow in as the body anxiously awaits for you to feed it the potent nutrition and right mindset to uproot your deeply seated challenges.

Until that moment, you will put a block on any healing process.

#2 – Belief in the Conventional Medical System

Another major stumbling block to healing is the belief that the answers lie within the conventional wisdom of doctors, scientists, and pharmaceutical companies.

The painful truth, which is self evident by the state of people’s health, is that they have done a poor job of increasing people’s vitality and removing the root cause of any disease process already present in the body. What they have done a good job of is diagnosing, labelling, enslaving, and managing people’s symptoms which creates lifelong customers, but unhappy ones at best.

Only in a system where you feel you have no other choice would people keep coming back to it. This is the definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

The stark reality of our current system is that it is a sickcare system, not a healthcare system. It does not promote healing…it promotes hiding, managing, and applying bloody bandages on a day-to-day basis to the sores that do not get better.

The conventional medical system is good at critical care and life threatening situations. It’s terrible at promoting quality of life and a healthy lifestyle.

So if you still believe in the conventional medical system in that it can create a reasonable quality of life and have largely shunned all other possibilities, you have created a permanent barrier to healing.

#3 – Belief in the Industrialized Food System

Swine FarmOur food system is not what it was 50 years ago, and if you believe you can heal yourself through it, you are in for a rude awakening.

The current mode of production and distribution has helped eliminate a large amount of nutrients in our food, and to add insult to injury, has laced them with toxic chemicals to leave them a fraction of the nutrient value that they would be coming from your own garden, or someone else’s who has made it a priority to produce clean food in gently tilled, nutrient rich soils.

Perhaps you need a refresher on how our food is produced, why it is harming you, and can rarely if ever heal you. This article is a great start.

The industrialized food system will provide some sustenance and nutrients for your body, but it can’t reverse any damage incurred over your lifetime. To do that, you require potent nutrition and supplementation so the body is given the power to heal itself.

As long as you believe that the current food system is good enough to help you become truly healthy, you will always have a barrier to healing.

#4 – Disbelief Your Body Can Be Healed

I understand, everyone’s situation is different. You have tried everything and nothing works. You’ve lost hope or have completely blocked the idea that your body is capable of becoming healthy again. Don’t continue tell your mind or body that. That is counterproductive.

Realizing that all situations are more acute than others, I can boldly say that healing is always possible. Now, this doesn’t mean it won’t be extremely difficult for some of you, and it doesn’t mean that the answers and protocols are easy to find, but I can say that whatever the body creates, it can eliminate.

I empathize with those who have found themselves in precarious situations. It’s not enjoyable, nor is it easy. I know this from personal experience…having gone through debilitating pain, doctors visits, and prescriptions that solved nothing.

However, the one thing they couldn’t take away from me was my faith. I believed that the answers were somewhere and that I just needed to keep moving forward until my persistence paid off and I found them. Fortunately, I did find these answers and put them in place over a period of 8 years, until I managed to give my body what it needed to completely heal itself (and the reason why I can now help others do it in a mere fraction of the time).

So if you don’t believe you can be healed, you are sure to not find the answers to true healing.

#5 – Disbelief You Can Find Someone Who Can Help Your Body Heal

If you do overcome the disbelief that your body can heal itself, then you need to overcome what is often the biggest trap of all, the belief you cannot find someone who can help your body heal.

Now, no one should describe themselves as a healer. The only thing that can take credit for healing is the body. It in the only thing that has the infinite intelligence required to govern effective healing, and actually put the processes into action that will ultimately lead to real healing.

A healer should be thought of more as a broker or facilitator. They recommend or provide the tools, the advice, and in some cases broker the kind of energy required for the body to overcome its disease through direct contact. Regardless of the method, they understand how to ‘translate’ the body’s signals and provide the things it requires to take care of itself.

However, if you are inherently skeptical about finding this type of person, one will never come into your midst, as you have created a monumental barrier to your own healing.

Your Beliefs Are Most important

Sure, there are plenty of other barriers to healing, like improper food and supplementation choices, doing things at the wrong time and in the wrong order, and ingesting toxic ingredients. However, the most debilitating barrier is a closed mind, because it leads to nothing but closed doors. This will never lead to an opportunity to heal the body.

Don’t make the mistaken assumption your body is not intelligent enough to heal itself. It could be the most costly mistake you ever make.

The Health Benefits of Cucumbers

Superfoods are natural foods that have an array of nutrients that synergistically work to together to exponentially expand the individual nutritional components.  Many raw, organic vegetables fall into this category.  One of the world’s favorite superfoods is cucumbers.

Cucumbers are the 4th most cultivated vegetable in the world.  Cucumbers are in the same botanical family as melons and squashes.  They are considered one of the absolute best foods for the health of the skin, joints, liver and  kidneys.  They are also a natural energy tonic with their rich array of phytonutrients and electrolytes.

Cucumbers are Rich in Silica

Cucumbers are loaded with the mineral silica, which is an essential component for healthy connective tissue (muscles, ligaments, cartilage, bone, & skin).  They are also full of ionic potassium, magnesium, and  vitamin C, which gives them a powerful alkalizing effect within the body.  Additionally, cucumbers are particularly rich in fluids that hydrate the skin, joints, and tissues.

More recently scientists have begun studying the unique lignans found in cucumbers.  These lignans include lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol.  New research is linking these lignans with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease as well as breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate cancer.

Cucumbers Inhibit Cancer Cell Signaling

Cucumbers also contain the triterpene phytonutrients cucurbitacins A, B, C, D & E.  These phytonutrients have been the major focus of some extensive research looking deeply into their abilities to inhibit cancer cell signaling pathways.

Fresh cucumbers have been shown to improve anti-oxidant levels within the body and inhibit pro-inflammatory substances such as COX-2 and nitric oxide.  The combination of alkalizing elements, electrolytes, and fluids make it one of the world’s best foods for enhancing energy levels.  Cucumbers are also great for stabilizing blood pressure and stimulating the body’s natural detoxification process.

Cucumbers Make For Beautiful Skin

Cucumbers are often used topically to enhance skin function.  The natural ascorbic acid and caffeic acid within the cucumber act to prevent water retention in the skin.  This reduces swelling under the eyes and helps the skin heal from sunburn, inflammation, and eczema.

Cucumbers are also very effective when eaten and applied topically for removing unwanted cellulite.  Cucumbers act to draw out excess fluids and tighten collagen which has the effect of a natural cellulite reduction.  Simply eat some cucumber, juice it and/or place the cucumber on the regions of water retention.

Get Your Cucumbers Organic

Cucumbers are typically highly sprayed with pesticides so it is necessary to get organic varieties.  If conventional is the only option, it is best to scrape off the green skin rather than washing.  Many of the chemicals are waxy and do not come off easy when washing.

Try dicing up cucumbers and adding some apple cider vinegar, oregano, and pink salt.  This makes a quick, electrolyte and enzyme-rich snack to boost energy levels.

Things Health Nuts Do With Their Food

There are a variety of things people do to food. Some of the most common practices are baking, grilling, frying, deep frying, and microwaving. However, if you are a true health nut, you cut back on the heat and destruction of food and focus on processes that leave it raw or lightly cooked so real healing can begin in the body. Here are the top 5 things health nuts do with their food.

Blending

One of the first things you will see in a health nut’s home is a high quality blender. It’s not uncommon to see a lot of affection towards it, including winks, smiles, and gentle rubbing.

Seriously though, a blender gets a serious work out in a health nut’s home for 3 main reasons: smoothies, soups, and dips.

A common staple in any health nut’s diet is a smoothie. Nothing wakes up a thirsty, hungry, and acidic body first thing in the morning more than a delicious, alkaline, and satisfying superfood smoothie. Not only that, but you can pack more nutrition in a single smoothie than most people can pack in for an entire day, which results in incredible healing benefits. It makes getting in your daily fruits, vegetables, super foods, fiber, protein, and healthy fats, incredibly easy.

Get some ideas with these fun smoothie recipes.

Another great use for a blender is making cold and hot soups. Blending your ingredients and making a smooth textured soup greatly assists in the digestion and assimilation of nutrients so that you are absorbing as many of the beneficial vitamins, minerals, and enzymes as possible.

Finally, another major use for blenders is making fresh and savoury dips.  Whether it’s an award winning almond hummus or a healthy mayonnaise, blenders make it incredibly easy to whip these dips up in a fraction of the time and with flavourful results.

In terms of staying fresh in the refrigerator, smoothies will typically last only 1-3 hours before they go “bad” (if no preserving agent is added), and soup and dip will last up to a week.

Juicing

Another important component to preparing healthy food is juicing. Health nuts will spend more time preparing a fresh juice in the morning than most people spend preparing dinner. True story.

Juice is a great idea because it allows you to maximize your intake of fruits and vegetables (you can often get 3-4 pieces of fruit into a 12 to 16 oz glass of juice), create superior and maximum absorption of nutrients and enzymes, and put little to no stress on the digestive system in the process. This is where some real healing can begin when done properly.

Not only that, juicing can create drinks that are simply amazing. The freshness combined with your creativity can result in an unlimited amount of recipes, and you can feel good about it knowing that the nutrients and enzymes are still largely in place, with no extra ingredients required!

In terms of staying fresh, juice should be consumed immediately after it has been rendered to enjoy the nutrients and enzymes at their highest value. However, it can last a couple days, depending on your juicing method and ability to store it in airtight jars.

Fermenting

Another popular thing health nuts do with their food is fermentation. Although not as prevalent as some of the other methods, it is perhaps the most important of all.

Fermentation is the art of taking a food medium, adding a probiotic culture, and placing it in airtight containers to allow the bacteria to replicate to create an end product teeming with probiotics, vitamins, enzymes, and other beneficial nutrients.

It’s very important to note that since we have 10 times more bacteria than cells in our body and  80% of our immune system lies within our digestive system, fermented foods are one of the most important things you can do for your health. True healing does not begin until you get these foods into your diet. And fermenting foods is a very cheap method of preservation. Done correctly, fermented foods can last as long or longer than that jar of pickles in the cold room, with way more health benefits.

Dehydrating

Many health nuts prepare their foods in a way that results in a lot less heat, leaving them much more “‘raw”, keeping delicate enzymes and nutrients intact for consumption.

A dehydrator essentially allows you to create food that would traditionally be baked at much higher temperatures, such as breads, crackers, granola, and crusts, and allows you to gently heat them at levels that keep the delicate nutrients intact. It also allows you to create dried fruit, “chips” (kale chips are outstanding) and other treats that can last much longer than their fresh counterparts.

Dehydrating can preserve food for an indefinite amount of time and is a great choice for hiking or long trips. I can assure you, carrying a dozen apples in your backpack is much bulkier and heavier than carrying 12 dehydrated apples. Dehydrating definitely has its benefits.

Soaking/Sprouting

A sure sign you are in a health nut’s house is various bowls on the counter (right beside the jars of fermented and dehydrated foods) with standing water, filled with nuts, seeds, and grains. There is a method behind their madness.

Nature has set it up so that the nut, grain, and seed may survive until proper growing conditions are present. Nature’s defense mechanism includes nutritional inhibitors and toxic substances that can be removed naturally when there is enough precipitation to sustain a new plant after the nut, grain, or seed germinates. When it rains the nut, grain or seed gets wet and can then germinate to produce a plant. So we are mimicking nature when we soak our nuts, grains, and seeds.

Nutritional inhibitors and toxic substances found in nuts, grains, and seeds can be minimized or eliminated by soaking. These inhibitors and toxic substances are enzyme inhibitors, phytates (phytic acid), polyphenols (tannins), and goitrogens.

Since nuts and seeds provide a wide array of healthy fats, protein, trace minerals, and nutrients it is a good idea to include them in your diet. Just make sure you soak them to ensure they provide the most benefits, with minimal side effects.

So if you are not a full blown health nut yet, and haven’t used a lot of these methods, what’s holding you back?
