Dying to Look Good
by Christine Hoza Farlow, D.C.
Book Review
Dying to Look Good is an informative and revealing source for the consumer. It’s high time we all learn the truth about soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, beauty products, toothpaste, deodorants, sunscreens, and such, and realize that our government is not insuring our safety.
Dr. Farlow reveals the uneasy truth about the limits of our protection and the misconceptions, which are exploited by manufacturers. For example, there is no requirement to test beauty products before they go to market. Known carcinogenic and neurotoxic ingredients are included in everyday beauty products. Our skin soaks up these ingredients like a sponge. You don’t have to ingest a carcinogen to insert it into your bloodstream. Washing with one works just as well.
If a product says it is natural, do not be assured. Natural on a label is meaningless. There is no standard for natural. We need to read the label, but we also need to understand the label we are reading. Dr. Farlow’s book dedicates 102 pages to a list of cosmetic and personal care ingredients with explanations and definitions so you can know if an ingredient is toxic or safe. She also includes company and product lists to help you find safe and healthy alternatives.
