With so many grocery stores calling themselves “farmers markets” many people have never been to a real farmers market before. Chicago’s Green City Market (GCM) is not just a farmers market with over 45 farmers, it’s a sustainable green, eco-friendly market. This year marks its 10th year as Chicago’s only sustainable green market. GCM is a proactive venue with many sustainable or certified organic farmers and thousands of shoppers. With Chef cooking demos, the “Sprouts” education program for kids, and “Breakfast Club” discussions about the link between well-being and good nutrition, Shopping at the Green City Market is more than just a trip for groceries. You can bring the whole family, get to know the local farmers, learn tips for preparing food, and connect with your food and the people that produce it.
GCM’s membership base funds outreach and educational initiatives. GCM has two Edible Gardens in Lincoln Park Zoo’s Farm-in-the-Zoo, to name just one of many community partnerships. The city’s year-round resource for sustainable food, Green City Market is held in Lincoln Park from late spring through fall and at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in winter through early spring.
