From time to time we at OLM will share our thoughts on books and movies that particularly speak to us. Unlike other reviewers, we are not attempting to match our reviews to new releases. The movie
Into the Wild is an excellent example. It was released in September 2007. We waited to catch it on DVD.
Into the Wild is based on the true story of Christopher McCandless, a young man who graduated from Emory University in 1990. Rather than return home in preparation for law school as expected, he gave his $24,000.00 in savings to charity and set out in search of an authentic life. Once he reached the west coast, McCandless ditched his car, burned the last of his cash, and set off on foot with his backpack. Eventually he met his ultimate challenge; he walked into the Alaskan wild to survive on his own. This movie chronicles his adventures and his family’s two year search to find him. The movie was brilliantly directed by Sean Penn, who also wrote the screenplay based on the book with the same title by Jon Krakauer.
This film is heart wrenching and glorious, well worth your time. Our only wish was that Mr. Penn had not needlessly changed facts about McCandless and his family. While some dramatic license is necessary to bring a true story to the screen, changing actual known facts left us wondering what else was real and what was fiction.
