USDA Illegally Approved Monsanto’s GMO Beets

   On September 21, 2009, Judge Jeffrey S. White of the Federal District Court in San Francisco ruled that the USDA illegally approved Monsanto’s genetically modified “Roundup Ready beets” because no environmental impact statement was completed.
   Judge White said the USDA’s approval of Roundup Ready sugar beets as not having any significant environmental effects does not take into account the threat to neighboring farmers from cross-contamination from Monsanto’s GMO crops to non-GMO beets fields or Swiss chard fields.
   The case against the Department of Agriculture was brought by the Center for Food Safety, the Sierra Club, the Organic Seed Alliance, and High Mowing Organic Seeds.
