Beijing Runs Dry
Explosive growth and persistent drought plagues the region in and around Beijing, China, where the 2008 Summer Olympics will be held. Residents don’t have the luxury of running water. Farmers have no water for crops and are forbidden from tapping local reserves. They are told to plant corn as it requires less water than rice or vegetables.
